Do you want your class to know more about how to navigate the library and the resources we provide? Our librarians are happy to provide an instruction session for your class! We are able to provide instruction to in-person classes as well as online!

Also, remember that we have several interactive tutorials that pair well with our instruction sessions. Many instructors have found that assigning one or more tutorials either before or after a library session works well to help reinforce the concepts that we introduce. Tutorials can be embedded in Canvas for extra convenience!

We offer two main types of sessions: ENG 131 - Intro to Library Research (mandatory for all in-person ENG 131 classes) and custom sessions.

ENG 131 - Intro to Library Research is a one-hour session that works with our ENG 131 Guide. We introduce students to the college library, basics of using an academic database (keywords, choosing a database, search strategies), citations, and how to get help. ENG 131 instructors are free to book a follow-up custom session, as well!

Custom sessions are based on the time that you have available. Slots start at 30 minutes and can go up from there!

Topics we can cover for a custom session include:

  • Library Basics: Library's website, services, how to get help, and basics of searching using our Discovery Search.
  • Scholarly Research: How to find scholarly/academic articles, including how to read & use them as sources.
  • Web Evaluation: Tips & tricks for evaluating sites that go beyond domain extension and "About" pages.
  • Plagiarism & Citation: Understand what plagiarism is, why it's important to cite their sources, and how to cite research. We'll show off the citation tools in our databases as well!
  • ChatGPT & Generative AI: Basics of Generative AI tools (both text and image), including how they work and what they can (and can't) do. We'll also cover how to spot AI-generated content with a fun game!
  • Assignment-Based Session: Have a specific assignment you're working on? We can customize our session based on this, including pointing students to our specific databases that will help them.
  • Other Topics: Want us to cover something not listed here? Let us know and we'll work with you to cover it!

The time limits suggested below are just that: suggestions. We can customize the session to any timeframe that you need!

Don't see availability for the time(s) you need? Please contact Jennifer Mikesell, Library Director, and we will work to accommodate your needs! We are happy to travel to other campuses or do night classes as our schedules allow.
